Definition. An autonomous floor scrubber is a scrubber-dryer that needs neither a driver nor an operative walking behind it: it memorises the site plan, follows programmed routes, steers around obstacles, brushes the floor with a cleaning solution, recovers the dirty water and leaves a dry floor behind it, then returns to its docking station to recharge and, depending on the model, to refill and drain. In buyers' vocabulary it is the commercial robotic floor scrubber; in the cleaning industry's, the autonomous floor scrubber or robotic scrubber.

It belongs to the scrubber-dryer family, the machines that scrub hard floors, alongside the walk-behind and the ride-on. What changes is how the machine is driven, and therefore how the work is organised: the operative programmes, checks and handles the areas the machine does not cover, instead of pushing it. This is the principle of cobotics applied to floor scrubbing.

The category

What an autonomous floor scrubber does

💧

It scrubs, recovers and dries

Rotating brush, dosed cleaning solution, squeegee and recovery of the dirty water: the floor is scrubbed and dry in a single pass, ready to walk on immediately.

🤖

No operator

LIDAR and camera navigation, SLAM mapping: the robotic scrubber follows its programmed routes, steers around obstacles and returns to its docking station. Conformity with the IEC 63327 safety standard, published by a minority of manufacturers, is measured in our 2026 barometer.

🧴

Constant dosing

Water and detergent are dosed automatically, identically on every pass: the quality of the scrub no longer depends on the operator or the time of day. On a floor protected by an emulsion, this neutral dosing is what preserves the floor finish. Burnishing remains a task for the operative: see our guide to burnishing and the spray method.

📊

Traceable runs

Areas covered, durations, areas not treated: every cycle sends back its report. Cleanliness becomes a tracked indicator, not an impression.

Several recent ride-on scrubbers are also autonomous: they are driven through the complex areas and run on their own along the aisles. They appear in the table of models below.

Where scrubbing applies

What a robotic floor scrubber really handles

🛢️

Adherent soiling

Forklift tyre marks, light grease, residues stuck to the floor: where sweeping is no longer enough, mechanical scrubbing lifts and recovers them.

🧱

Commercial hard floors

Polished concrete, epoxy resin, tiles, vinyl, stone: the scrubber adapts to the surface through the choice of brushes and the pressure setting.

🦶

Immediate safety

The squeegee and the recovery leave a dry floor behind the machine: no wet film, no slip risk as it passes.

For dry soiling ahead of scrubbing, see the autonomous sweepers; for fine dust and carpet, the commercial robotic vacuums. Many sites combine two families, each on its own frequency.

Rated productivity is theoretical; expect half to two thirds of it on a real site. "n/p": figure not published by the manufacturer. Autonomous sweepers and vacuums, along with the full market table, are on the guide to commercial cleaning robots.

The range

The autonomous floor scrubbers we deploy

From the compact multifunction robot for offices to the large-area scrubber-dryer.

The BG1 is our reference large-area scrubber-dryer: it sweeps and scrubs in a single pass, with an extending brush for the edges. The BG1 Pro adds 3D perception for very large, complex sites. The CC1 and CC1 Pro cover compact areas and offices as multifunction robots. The SH1, an upright scrubber guided by an operative, completes the range for small areas: it is not autonomous and is covered separately.

Choosing well

The 5 criteria that set scrubbers apart

📐

Cleaning width

From 40 cm to move through cluttered offices to more than 70 cm with side brushes to cover a hall in as few passes as possible.

🚰

Tank capacity

Clean water and recovery tanks determine the real runtime between two visits to the docking station. Large-format models carry tens of litres.

Productivity and modes

Productivity at full coverage is the true measure. Targeted modes, which scrub the detected dirty areas first, advertise higher figures.

🔌

Docking stations

Charging, clean-water fill, dirty-water drain, detergent dosing: depending on the model, these operations are automated at the station, with no plumbing work.

🚪

Footprint and passages

Minimum passage width, turning radius, height: the right format depends on your doors, aisles and cluttered areas.

To work through these criteria model by model, our guide to choosing a floor scrubber compares the approaches in detail. And to size for your actual floor areas, a free demonstration remains the shortest route.

FAQ

Your questions about autonomous floor scrubbers

What is an autonomous floor scrubber?

An autonomous floor scrubber is a floor scrubbing machine that moves on its own: it maps the site, follows programmed routes, brushes, doses the cleaning solution, recovers the dirty water and dries the floor in a single pass, then returns to its docking station. It is also called a robotic floor scrubber or robotic scrubber.

What is the difference between an autonomous, a walk-behind and a ride-on scrubber?

The walk-behind is guided by an operative walking behind the machine. The ride-on is driven from a seated or standing position. The autonomous floor scrubber moves on its own along a mapped route, using LIDAR and cameras, and returns to its docking station. All three scrub on the same principle: brush, cleaning solution, squeegee and recovery. Some ride-on models are also autonomous and combine both modes.

Autonomous floor scrubber or robotic floor scrubber: are they the same thing?

Yes, in everyday usage. "Autonomous floor scrubber" is the cleaning industry's term, "robotic floor scrubber" the buyers' term. The nuance: compact multifunction robots sweep and vacuum as well as scrub, whereas the autonomous floor scrubber in the strict sense only scrubs and dries.

Can an autonomous floor scrubber work with customers or staff present?

Yes. The models we deploy detect people and obstacles, adjust their speed and stop if necessary. In a supermarket as in a reception hall, runs are preferably scheduled during off-peak hours, but coexistence with the public is part of the design of these machines.

On which floors does an autonomous floor scrubber work?

On commercial hard floors: polished concrete, epoxy resin, tiles, vinyl, stone. The choice of brushes and the pressure setting are adapted to the surface. Carpet is not scrubbing territory: it belongs to autonomous vacuuming.

What area does an autonomous floor scrubber cover?

The large format covers 2,000 m²/h at full coverage, more in targeted modes that scrub the detected dirty areas first. Compact multifunction robots cover 700 to 1,000 m²/h. The right sizing depends on your actual floor areas and how cluttered they are: that is what the demonstration is for.

How much does an autonomous floor scrubber cost?

Prices are not public: they depend on the model, the docking station, the level of service and the volume. Our model is a full-service subscription, with robots, teams, consumables, maintenance and a 72-hour continuity guarantee, or purchase with a maintenance contract for sites that equip their own teams. Both are quoted after a demonstration.

Autonomous floor scrubber or robotic scrubber: is it the same thing?

Yes: "robotic floor scrubber" is the everyday name for the autonomous floor scrubber, a scrubber-dryer that works without an operator. The term "autonomous floor scrubber" names the machine by its family, "robotic scrubber" by its autonomy; data sheets use one or the other.

What area does an autonomous floor scrubber cover per night?

From 2,000 to 5,000 m² for a compact 40 to 55 cm model and from 4,000 to 8,000 m² for a 55 to 75 cm model with a docking station, over a night shift, depending on clutter; observed productivity falls between half and two thirds of the manufacturer's rated productivity.

Does an autonomous floor scrubber need a water supply?

Without a docking station, no: it is filled and drained by hand, which limits its real runtime to one tank. With a water station, it needs a water supply and a drain close to the dock; that is what allows it to run cycle after cycle without intervention and to work overnight.
