Commercial cleaning robot prices and total cost of ownership over five years: market figures, item by item, with sources

"How much does a commercial cleaning robot cost?" is the first question every site manager asks, and the one the market answers worst: most resellers point you to a quotation, the few prices that are published do not say what they include, and the purchase price is in any case only part of the cost. This article does what we could not find anywhere else: it gathers every published price we were able to verify, from French and North American sources, family by family and model by model, then rebuilds the total cost of a robot over five years, item by item (docking station, maintenance, consumables, battery, training, operating time), with the market figures and their sources, and sets it against the cost of a cleaning operative and of an outsourced contract. Every figure is dated and sourced; the full list of sources is at the end of the article. Easy to Clean's own prices are not in it: they depend on the site and are quoted after an on-site demonstration. What this article gives you is the framework for reading any quotation, ours included. Observed purchase prices, family by family

The commercial cleaning robot market publishes few of its prices, but it does publish some. In September 2026 we recorded the prices displayed by French and North American resellers, marketplaces and price guides for the most widely sold models. They are quoted excluding VAT, docking station, installation and training unless stated otherwise, and in their original currency: a price in US dollars is not a European price, but it gives the order of magnitude, and the gap between the two markets is generally 10 to 20%. Three things to take from this table. First, the gap between a compact robot and a wide autonomous floor scrubber is a factor of two to three, and it matches a factor of two to three in the area covered per hour; the price per square metre covered is more stable than the price per machine. Second, the price of a given model varies by 10 to 15% from one reseller to another and with the trim level, which is normal in a distribution market and is a good reason to ask for several quotations. Third, these prices almost never include the docking station, installation, training or the maintenance contract, which are covered in the following sections; a "machine only" price is a starting point, not a budget.

Docking stations, accessories and commissioning: what the machine price leaves out

The docking station is the item most often missing from displayed prices, and the most decisive. Without one, a robot charges from a wall socket and is filled by hand: it works, but it does not work on its own. The public prices we found at French resellers give the order of magnitude: a charging station for a compact multifunction robot around €2,000 (€1,979), a charging station for a sweeper around €1,000 (€959), a mobile water station around €1,400 (€1,366). The full docking stations of autonomous floor scrubbers, which handle charging, clean water, waste water and sometimes rinsing, are not displayed; according to industry practitioners they lie between €3,000 and €8,000 depending on the brand and the plumbing connection, and some require plumbing and drainage work on top.

Start-up accessories weigh less: a brush kit around €200, pads and squeegee blades from €10 to €150 each. Commissioning (mapping the site, setting up the route plan, initial training) is included by some resellers and charged by others, from a few hundred to a few thousand euros depending on the size of the site and the number of robots; lift integration, where it is possible, is a separate quotation with the lift company. Finally, allow for the space: a station needs a floor position, usually close to a water supply and a drain for floor scrubbers, and Wi-Fi or 4G coverage for remote supervision.

The annual running cost: maintenance, consumables, battery

A robot wears like a scrubber-dryer: brushes, pads, squeegees, filters, bags, sensors to be cleaned, and a battery that loses capacity. The sources agree on the orders of magnitude. The service or maintenance contract (preventive servicing, wear parts, updates, support) comes to 10 to 15% of the purchase price per year, or €2,000 to €4,000 for a €25,000 machine. Consumables alone, outside any contract, are estimated at $500 to $1,000 per year for a floor scrubber, and at around €30 per month for a compact robot by a French reseller, the difference being down to machine size and usage. The lithium battery is replaced between the third and fifth year depending on the number of cycles, at €2,000 to €5,000; it is sometimes covered by the contract, often not, and that is a question to ask before signing.

To these items add water and electricity, which are marginal (a few tens of euros per month), detergent, comparable to that of a walk-behind scrubber, and equipment insurance, which depends on the contract. The total running cost, excluding labour, therefore lies between 12 and 20% of the purchase price per year over five years, battery included, which the worksheet at the end of the article lets you work out for your own case.

The total cost over five years, with two examples

The total cost of ownership (TCO) adds up the purchase, the docking station and commissioning, the running costs over the period of use and the operating labour, and deducts the residual value, which is low for a five-year-old robot. We build it over five years, the usual depreciation period and a reasonable lifespan for a well-maintained machine; one French reseller uses two to three years, which is an accounting choice rather than a lifespan.

These ranges are wide because the sources are; they are consistent with the observed rates for all-inclusive rental or RaaS, $450 to $1,200 per month depending on the machine and the service level, which cover in a single line the purchase, the docking station, maintenance, consumables and, in most cases, replacement. The useful reading is not "the robot costs X" but "the robot costs €600 to €2,000 per month all-inclusive depending on its size, and it covers 1,000 to 5,000 m² per shift": it is that second sentence that can be compared with a labour cost.

Comparing with the cost of an operative and of an outsourced contract

According to the French sources cited below, a cleaning operative costs the employer between €14 and €17 per hour fully loaded, or €900 to €1,200 per month for a part-time position of three hours a day and €2,000 to €2,600 for a full-time one; an outsourced contract is billed at between €18 and €28 per hour, supervision, equipment, products and margin included. On a typical site, 60 to 95% of cleaning time goes on floors, and a manual cleaning invoice lies between €1,200 and over €5,000 excl. VAT per month depending on the sector and the floor area.

A robot does not replace an operative; it absorbs hours of floor work. The resellers who publish figures estimate that a robot takes over 1 to 3 hours of work per day, or 20 to 60 hours per month: at €15 per hour fully loaded, €300 to €900 of employer cost; at €18 to €28 per hour billed, €360 to €1,700 of contract cost. Set against the €600 to €2,000 monthly total cost of a robot, the calculation breaks even or is slightly positive for a compact robot on an office or retail site, and is clearly positive for an autonomous floor scrubber in a warehouse, a hypermarket or a car park, where floor hours are counted in dozens per week. One shopping centre equipped with robots reports a 30% drop in its cleaning spend, a figure published by a reseller and to be taken for what it is: one case, not an average.

What the hourly calculation does not capture, and what weighs in the decision, is everything that has no hourly price: the regularity of the passes, traceability, cover for the night slots nobody wants to fill, the physical strain taken off operatives, and the sector's recruitment difficulties, which make a night-shift hour far more expensive than its loaded cost. The hidden costs, and how to put a figure on them

  • Operator time. An autonomous robot is not a robot with nobody around: starting it, checking it, emptying, refilling, cleaning the sensors, reading the reports, 15 to 30 minutes per day depending on the machine and the station. At €15 per hour, €900 to €1,900 per year. A full docking station reduces that time; not having one doubles it.
  • Finishing work. Edges, corners, washrooms, stairs, cluttered areas: what the robot does not do still has to be done. A route plan that does not provide for it makes you pay twice.
  • Downtime. A robot out of order with no replacement means a site left uncleaned or a team called back at short notice; the contractual replacement lead time (24 hours, 72 hours, a week) is worth more than a few hundred euros of rental.
  • Training every time someone leaves. Staff turnover among operatives is high; every new operative has to be trained on the robot. Training that is included and can be repeated, or a machine that is easy to pick up, has a value you can put a figure on.
  • Building integration. Lifts, doors, Wi-Fi, water supply, drainage: from nothing to several thousand euros, to be asked for in the quotation.
  • Software obsolescence. Updates, the supervision platform and, sometimes, a software subscription; check the contract over five years.
  • Under-use. The most common hidden cost: a robot sized for 5,000 m² that covers 1,500 because the route plan is timid costs three times as much per square metre. It is the configuration, not the machine, that sets the real cost.

All-inclusive rental, RaaS or purchase: how to read a quotation

Three models coexist. Purchase with a maintenance contract: the robot goes on the balance sheet, depreciated over four to five years, and the contract covers servicing and parts; this is the formula for sites that have their own teams and long-term visibility. All-inclusive rental, or RaaS (robot as a service): a monthly rate per robot covering the machine, the docking station, maintenance, consumables, updates and replacement, with no capital outlay, cancellable or revisable depending on the contract; published rates lie between $450 and $1,200 per month depending on the machine and the service level. The full-service contract: the robot is built into a cleaning service with teams, and the client buys a result, not a machine; this is Easy to Clean's model, where the cost reads as a monthly service fee rather than a robot rental.

To compare quotations, the grid is the same whatever the model: bring each offer back to a total monthly cost over five years, including docking station, maintenance, consumables, battery, training, replacement and operating time, then set it against the area covered per shift and the floor hours it absorbs. A rate that looks high but includes replacement within 72 hours and the battery is often cheaper than a low purchase price followed by a maintenance contract at 15% and a €4,000 battery. The thresholds: from what floor area a robot pays its way

From the figures above, indicative thresholds can be set, which the demonstration then confirms or overturns on each site. A compact multifunction robot pays its way from 1,500 to 2,000 m² of open floor cleaned at least five times a week, or from 1,000 m² if the slot is at night or hard to staff. An autonomous floor scrubber of 50 to 75 cm pays its way from 4,000 to 5,000 m² of aisles or sales floor, and becomes very profitable above 10,000 m². An autonomous sweeper pays its way as soon as an industrial or logistics site sweeps more than 3,000 m² of heavily soiled floor every day.
